Fundraising Editorial Guidelines

Communicating about UC Davis' development program and the impact of fundraising on the university's programs is very important. But as much as we would like them to be, not all gift stories are read or published.

Categories to consider for what might make a good donor story are:

Inspirational or has human interest

  • Does the donor or gift have a special emotional appeal?
  • Is the donor well-known locally, nationally or internationally?
  • Is the donor well-known for an invention, collection, way of life, etc.?
  • Does the donor have an interesting past, such as overcoming obstacles or other special achievements? Is the donor an unusual or inspirational person?
  • Is the donor's motivation for giving this gift especially inspiring?
  • Is the gift the result of an award, prize or scholarship?

Gift motivation

  • Has the donor decided to make this gift for an unusual personal or intellectual reason?
  • Is the gift going to an interesting, noteworthy, controversial, or much-publicized cause?

Gift amount

  • Is the gift amount significant? How or why?

Unique Gift

  • Is the gift a "first" of its kind to the university or program?
  • Is the way that the gift was given interesting?

Gift Impact

  • Does the gift significantly impact a major fundraising initiative at UC Davis?
  • Will the gift be used for an interesting, unique or unusual program?

Gift Method

  • Did the gift come in an unusual form? (i.e., not just cash) Does it offer others a glimpse of how giving can be a good tool for financial planning?
